smallholderwannabe

This blog is mainly a rambling kind of diary of the transition from smallholderwannabe to smallholder.

Just a quick note to say one of my new little hens has laid an egg. I'm really surprised. I was not expecting any for another month at least and would not have been surprised if it had been longer. So I'm thrilled at how clever they are :) I'm not actually sure how old they are because I got them at a poultry auction and you are not told little details like that.

My little grandson came to call with his parents this evening - just for twenty minutes on his way home from Tesco. He has learnt to clap and when you say goodbye, he waves to you now. So many nice things happening today! And his parents brought me three packets of chopped tomatoes which are on offer at buy one, get two free for 59p. That is more pennies in the coffers. This is a step beyond bogof and I've not come across this offer before.

I've never heard of getting 2 free for buy 1 either! Good for you and for your kids!
    Blessings!

Hi Michelle - welcome to my musings! Are you a smallholderwannabe too?

    Hi Jo,
Well we kind of already are but we haven't gotten any animals yet or done a garden! We inherited a small acreage in the country and bought my parents old home from my sister and have remodeled it and moved in last November. We're just trying to be more frugal in everyway and hopefully get out of all debt(including mortgage) in 4-5 years. I love reading your blog - so inspiring! I'd also love to visit England someday - maybe when we're out of debt! :)

Thank you for the compliment - I'm not used to being called "inspiring". I started the blog as a kind of diary just for me but it has grown a little bit. We would love to have a few acres and move somewhere with clean air to help my husband's asthma. We'd really like to be a bit more selfsufficient too and have a few animals. Not too many because that would mean a huge input of work but with the price of land as high as it is in our area and with a new grandson nearby, I'll maybe just have to learn to be content with what I've got. I'd really like the opportunity to give it a go, though.

Nice to chat with you. I hope you succeed in your aims. I know that it is sometimes difficult to swap between English and US recipes but have you looked at this website?

It is an amazing resource when you are cutting back.

    Hi Jo,
No I haven't seen that website but I'll check it out today. Thanks for the heads-up. Anything to make the frugal life easier!
I understand about wanting to stay close to your grandson. We have one little granddaughter (10 months) and one on the way (due in Jan). Our daughter who has the 10 month old is about to move to Florida (we live in Texas) as her husband is being called to pastor a church there. We're happy for them but sad for ourselves...
I hope you find just the perfect spot.
    Blessings!

I'm glad you understand. Originally we started looking much further away where houses with a bit of land are much cheaper but when my grandson came along, my opinions changed. If we lived far away from here (all our children live within 10 miles of our house here) then our children said that of course they would visit but would they? They have busy lives too and they would not visit often. If we had any animals then we could not just up and leave them to go visit ourselves.

I appreciate your problem too. If you don't have too many ties, such as animals or regular church commitments like music or Sunday school then maybe you will be able to go and visit often. I do hope so because little children grow and change so fast. Perhaps you can set up one of those video camera links on the computer so that you can talk to them and see them at the same time.
